Until Google get their act together, unethical and spammy SEO techniques (black hat SEO) will always exist. The thing is, in addition to Link Building and creating pathways to popular, informative parts of the Internet, you also need to build Back Links for Search Engine Optimization purposes. These are links going back to your website from outside websites; very similar to links going outward from your website, but not quite the same. Google Analytics will be able to tell you where those converting visitors came from. And specifically, you’ll be able to see if someone who used your search term eventually ended up buying your product. Although the resource investment for monitoring each individual query and providing content for it isn’t reasonable, monitoring and building content for categories of queries is a manageable and worthwhile investment. Many people fixate on "on-page SEO" in their marketing efforts. They make sure their keywords are jammed in the copy and the internal links and silos are set up correctly. For a typical WordPress site this might take an hour or two to knock out the easy stuff.

While there plenty of differences between SEO and content marketing, there are also many areas where they overlap. Taking advantage of this overlap and using it in your website is the quickest way to get more people to visit your site.

When it comes to SEO, oftentimes a website owner thinks that their competitors are some of the largest brands in their industry, but that's not always the case. Basically, Googlebot and other web crawlers follow the links that they find on web pages. If Googlebot finds new links on a page, they will be added to the list of pages that will be visited next. If a link does not work anymore, or if there is new content on a web page, Google will update the index. You should aim to have the target search keyword within one of the HTML headers in your content (e.g. H2, H3, etc.). If you’re an existing business, you can learn a lot from your current customer base. If you have a shop you probably have a good idea of your target audience because you and your customer service team will be meeting and talking to them everyday. Otherwise, you could learn more about your customers by asking them to fill out a survey. Learning more about your target audience isn’t what directly affects your content promotion efforts, but if you don’t spend time on it, then the foundation of your content marketing is going to be very weak and you won’t see significant improvement. And don’t let SEO take over your life – you still have to be out there doing business.
